Project Background
A key associated gas processing plant of Saudi Aramco in the Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia faced challenges such as high energy consumption of pump and fan systems, unstable operation of control equipment under high temperature (45℃+) desert conditions, and low real-time monitoring efficiency of the production process. Targeting the plant’s pain points and the extreme working conditions of the Middle East desert, we provided a full-set automation control and drive solution based on ABB industrial automation core products, fully adapted to high temperature, dust and heavy-duty operation requirements:
- Core Control System: Adopted ABB AC500 XC PLC (IP65 protection grade) as the central control unit, with modular design and hot swap function, which can resist high temperature and dust interference, and realize seamless control of the whole gas processing process from raw gas intake, purification, compression to gas transmission.
- Intelligent Drive System: Equipped ABB ACS880 frequency converters for all water pumps, fans and compressors, using DTC (Direct Torque Control) technology to realize precise speed regulation and torque control. The converters are optimized for energy-saving performance, matching the variable load characteristics of gas processing equipment.
- Data Monitoring & Safety System: Integrated ABB 800xA DCS system and SICK safety light curtains/ pressure sensors, realizing real-time data collection, visualization monitoring and alarm management of key process parameters (pressure, temperature, flow rate). The system is connected with the plant’s ESD (Emergency Shutdown Device) to achieve automatic emergency shutdown in abnormal situations, ensuring production safety.
- Industrial Network & Wiring: Used WAGO spring terminals and MOXA industrial Ethernet switches to build a stable industrial communication network, with anti-interference performance and support for wide temperature operation (-20℃~70℃), fully adapted to the Middle East industrial environment.
